SRK, Vidya get best actor and actress; 'Dabangg' continues sweep
The best actor and actress awards in the popular choice section were won by Shah Rukh Khan for ‘My Name Is Khan’ and Vidya Balan for ‘Ishqiya’.
Vidya was at her witty best while accepting the award. “If I’d known that swearing, shooting a gun, and having an affair with two men would get me an award, I would have done it five years ago,” she said referring to her character in the movie.
SRK was more philosophical. “I didn’t think I could do this role, so I must thank Karan and Shibani (MNIK story writer) for their belief and support.”
The best actor and best actress awards in the jury section were won by Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, both for ‘Guzaarish’. Hrithik said, “This movie is very special to me because of its message. It is the suffering, weaknesses, and misery in our life that become the wind beneath our wings.”
Aishwarya thanked her “milestone director” Sanjay Leela Bhansali. “This is a very special film for me. I’ve always had career milestones with Sanjay’s movies – from ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ to ‘Devdas’ and now ‘Guzaarish’.”
Karan Johar won best Director in the popular section for ‘My Name Is Khan’ while Vikramaditya Motwane won the jury award for ‘Udaan’.
The awards, held at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore this year, were high on star presence. Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Arjun Rampal all performed on stage, with rocking songs from their movies this year.
SRK even got Hrithik and his usually shy wife Sussanne on stage. In a hilarious bit, SRK said that he'd show the audience how he'd taught Hrithik everything that the 'Guzaarish' star was known for. He also told Hrithik he'd teach him how to look after his wife, and proceeded to dance to 'Sajda' from 'MNIK' with him, with Sussanne watching on stage.
Priyanka Chopra introduced each of the Best Film nominees by dressing and getting into character of someone from that particular movie. So she was SRK’s Rizwan while introducing ‘MNIK’, she was Katrina while talking about ‘Raajneeti’, and Salman’s Chulbul Pandey while introducing ‘Dabangg’.
First-time host Akshay Kumar with Sajid Khan for company. And Akki began the ceremony by taking a potshot at himself. He asked the audience to observe a minute of silence, and then said it was for his movie 'Action Replayy' and that what happened to it (the movie flopped at the box office) shouldn't happen to anyone else! The duo cracked jokes about everyone from Katrina Kaif (saying she'd probably speak in English at a Hindi Prachar event) to Deepika Padukone (wondering which airline she'd flown in on, and calling it 'Raja Machwara Airlines).
The evening began with a glamorous red carpet that saw Deepika Padukone in a gorgeous Shantanu and Nikhil silver gown, Aishwarya Rai wearing Manish Malhotra and Neha Dhupia in Shane and Falguni Peapock.
